Justina's BBQ sauce
Justina’s original BBQ sauce recipe required 2 cups of regular ketchup but only had 1. We decided to use John’s homemade fruit ketchup instead. The funny thing is that it turned out the ketchup was even better! John’s fruit ketchup happens to be the special ingredient of this recipe. Everything happens for a reason and, by making mistakes you discover new ways and Justina’s Homemade BBQ sauce is out of this world! Just like the champagne story a mistake gave an unexpected flavour to this recipe!

Cooking time: 25 minutes |
Servings or yield: 1 batch |
Difficulty level: Easy |
2 cup of commercial Ketchup |
---|
½ cup. yellow mustard |
½ cup. brown sugar, packed |
¼ cup apple cider vinegar |
½ to 1 tsp. red pepper flakes, to taste |
1 ½ tbsp. chilli powder |
1 tbsp. freshly ground black pepper |
2 tsp. garlic powder |
½ tsp. celery salt |
1 tbsp. liquid smoke |
3 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce |
1 ½ tsp. rubbed dried sage (optional) |
Preparation
In a medium saucepan add all ingredients, mix well, bring to a simmer and cook over low heat about 25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until smooth and thickened.
Watch out for splashing (because of the thickness, splashes are messy). It's okay to cover.
Let cool slightly before serving. This BBQ sauce gets better as it sits.
